Greetings and welcome to First Unitarian Universalist Church of Stockton!
I am the Reverend Bob Klein! I am the settled Minister at 1st UU Church, and a Californian by choice, having come back to California in the summer of 2013.
Before coming to Stockton, I served as Minister of the UU Church in Little Rock, Arkansas from 2004 to 2013, and Co-Minister at Pacific Unitarian in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA from 1996-2004 (4 of those years I also was part-time consulting minister at the UU Fellowship of Kern County in Bakersfield). I also worked in Child Protective Services in New Jersey and Montana for a few years and served as a United Methodist Minister (mostly in Montana) for several years before that. I am a native of the Chicago Suburbs, am amicably divorced, and I have three adult children, 4 grandchildren, and 2 dogs.
First Unitarian Universalist Church has been serving Stockton for over 100 years, 80 or so of those from our current building. Though our beautiful sanctuary is built in a more traditional style, we are a liberal/progressive congregation welcoming people with many varied beliefs and lifestyles.
Though both the Unitarians and Universalists came from the liberal/progressive fringes of Christianity, we do not claim to be Christian as a movement. Many of us appreciate the teachings of Jesus, but we also learn from the sacred texts of Judaism, Buddhism, modern and ancient philosophers, other religious exemplars, the teachings of earth-centered religions, the wisdom of humanism, the sciences, and the universe as we understand it. Coming from many religious, philosophical and spiritual backgrounds, we have no creed, doctrine, or dogma, but generally agree on 7 humanistic principles that inspire us to create respectful and accepting community together and work to build a better world.
We hope that you will visit several of our Sunday services to see whether you might like to join us in the adventure of discovering and exploring our own individual beliefs in a tolerant, respectful and accepting community. I usually preach 3 Sundays each month while we welcome internal and external guest speakers on the other Sundays. Our services address questions of modern life, religious, philosophical, ethical and spiritual ideas, the history and future of Unitarian Universalism, and various other matters. We have a few rituals such as lighting our chalice each week that have become important to many UUs, sing hymns and songs, take time to share our joys and concerns, and have moments of silent thought/prayer/meditation. We also offer classes and groups to meet the needs of persons of all ages!
Please feel free to contact me, our Director of Religious Education, or the church office if you have questions, or just come visit us any Sunday morning at 10:30! Check us out!
