Weddings and Commitment Ceremonies

We are glad you are considering being married through our church. Here we would like to explain the Unitarian Universalist approach to weddings and our church’s policies on fees and building use. Please read this thoroughly before making your decision. Whether you choose to be married through our church or not, we hope your wedding will be very special for you!

The Unitarian Universalist Approach

We are a non-creedal church. That is, we have no formal doctrines or creeds, other than a belief in love, a commitment to the search for truth, and a desire to serve the world. Our membership includes atheists as well as theists, Jews as well as Christians—and a good many people who are neither. In a church of people with such diverse beliefs, we have no one, unalterable form for weddings. Our minister, the Rev. Robert Klein  will meet with the couple to help them create a ceremony that will be meaningful to them and express their beliefs and feelings.

If you wish to have someone else officiate at your wedding, our minister will be happy to meet with that person and invite them to participate as deemed appropriate. Any ceremony taking place in our building is assumed to represent Unitarian Universalism, and it is our minister’s responsibility to uphold the principles we affirm.

Our membership includes atheists as well as theists, Jews as well as Christians—and a good many people who are neither. In a church of people with such diverse beliefs, we have no one, unalterable form for weddings. Our minister, the Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig, normally spends two to three sessions with a couple to help them create a ceremony that will be meaningful to them and express their beliefs and feelings. During these sessions, she also offers premarital counseling to couples to help them build on their strengths and work through the inevitable challenges of any relationship. Our minister’s policy is to perform weddings only with this preparation.

Fees

If at least one member of the couple is a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Stockton, only the premarital counseling PREPARE/ENRICH fee of $30 applies. If neither party is a member, the following fees apply:

(1) PREPARE/ENRICH fee: $30. Every couple planning to be married by our minister is asked to take the PREPARE/ENRICH premarital counseling inventory and the Kiersey Temperament Sorter. Our minister will provide these instruments during her first session with you and ask you to complete them before your next session. These instruments are not a test for marriage—our minister believes the decision to be married rests with the couple themselves. Rather, premarital counseling is to help the couple explore their values, discover areas that may benefit from their attention, and examine important questions for their future. The inventories are not exams to be graded, but rather tools to help you begin your marriage with greater knowledge of yourselves.

(2) Minister’s Fee: Our minister’s fee, which includes all counseling services, is a sliding-scale fee of $350 to $700. Recognizing that the wedding ceremony is at the heart of your marriage celebration, we ask that you look generously at your overall wedding budget and choose a fee that seems fair to you.

If you would like our minister to attend your wedding rehearsal, that may be arranged for an additional fee of $50.

(3) Church Rental Fee: The fee for a wedding with reception in the church’s fellowship hall is $600. For a wedding without a reception at the church, the fee is $400. These fees include time for a rehearsal and the use of a dressing room. Please see our Facilities Use Fee Schedule and Regulations & Policies for more information.

(4) Musician’s Fee: Our pianist, Christopher Bradford, customarily plays for weddings at our church. His fee is $150 to perform at the service only and $200 to participate in the rehearsal and service. These prices are based on a two-hour service, with additional hours billed at $50 per hour.
